About Australian flag

Built by Australians. Designed for trust.

Saint Michael Systems Pty Ltd is a proprietary limited company registered in Australia and based in Sydney, New South Wales. Most technology companies lead with features. We would rather tell you who builds the software, where your data lives, and who you will actually speak to when something goes wrong.

Meet the owner & developer

Tim Carmichael, founder of Saint Michael Systems Pty Ltd

Tim Carmichael

Founder, Software Architect and Cyber Security Professional

Saint Michael Systems was founded by Tim Carmichael, an Australian software architect, cyber security professional and artificial intelligence specialist with more than 15 years of experience designing, implementing and supporting mission critical digital systems within one of Australia's largest public health environments.

That career spans application architecture, cyber security, clinical informatics, medicolegal information management, project delivery and AI-enabled solutions. Working in environments where privacy, security and system availability directly affect patient care has shaped the philosophy behind every Saint Michael Systems product.

That experience instilled a simple principle.

Security, privacy and reliability should never be optional features. They are foundational design requirements.

Tim continues to work at the forefront of Microsoft's Azure AI ecosystem, modern cyber security practice and enterprise software architecture, and brings those same engineering standards into every Saint Michael Systems solution.

Australian development, Australian data

We believe your information should remain exactly where you expect it to be.

  • Australian ownership and Australian software development
  • Australian based support, from the people who build the platform
  • No overseas development teams
  • No offshore call centres
  • No selling or monetising of customer data
  • Security-first engineering practice from the beginning of every project

Where cloud services are used, we prioritise Australian data residency through Microsoft Azure, with enterprise-grade security controls chosen to meet the expectations of organisations responsible for sensitive information.

Whether you are storing operational records, business information or future AI-generated insights, our position does not change.

Your data belongs to you, not to us.

Built to a higher standard

Many software companies are designed around marketing and rapid growth. Saint Michael Systems was founded around a different objective: to build software that people can trust.

Our engineering approach has been shaped by working in environments responsible for protecting highly sensitive information, running complex operational systems, and delivering solutions where security, auditability and resilience are not negotiable. That means we place significant weight on the following.

Defence in depth

Controls are layered so that no single failure exposes data. Network, identity, application and data protections are each designed on the assumption that the others could be bypassed.

Privacy by design

Privacy is settled while a feature is being designed rather than audited afterwards. What a feature is entitled to know is decided before it is built, not reconciled against it later.

Transparent governance

Who can access what, how long records are kept and how an incident is handled are written down and able to be explained on request. Governance a customer cannot inspect is not governance.

Human oversight of AI

AI-assisted workflows are built with a person accountable for the outcome. Models draft, summarise and suggest. They do not make decisions unattended, and there is always a clear human fallback.

Continuous improvement

Practices are reviewed as the threat landscape changes rather than fixed at launch. Controls that were adequate when a system shipped are not assumed to still be adequate today.

As our platform evolves, those principles remain unchanged.

The company

Saint Michael Systems Pty Ltd is an Australian software company. We design, build and operate software for organisations that need their systems to be dependable and their data to be handled properly. That work begins with residential communities, through our platform Home Protego.

We are a small engineering-led company. That is a deliberate choice: it means the people who make decisions about a product are the same people who write it, run it and answer support requests about it. There is no gap between what we say the software does and what we know it does.

We build for the Australian market, on infrastructure we operate ourselves, and we support our customers directly.

Why Saint Michael

The patron saint of protection, and of those who protect. The name was chosen as a standard, and it is a fair one to hold us to. Read why ›

Security-first approach

Our products handle personal information about where people live. We treat that as a serious responsibility and design for it from the outset rather than adding controls after the fact.

Encryption by default

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. All public endpoints are served over HTTPS with modern TLS, and unencrypted transport is not offered as an option.

Least privilege

Every component and every person receives the minimum access required to do the job. Administrative access is separated from routine access and is granted deliberately.

Isolation and separation

Customer data is separated by design so that one organisation's information is never reachable from another's context, and production is kept distinct from development and testing.

Managed, patched infrastructure

We build on managed cloud services so that the underlying platform is maintained and patched continuously rather than depending on hosts we have to remember to update.

Data minimisation

We collect the information a feature genuinely requires and no more. Data that is never collected cannot be exposed, and that is the most reliable control available.

Auditability

Significant actions are logged so that questions about what happened, when, and by whom can be answered from records rather than from recollection.

Cloud-native development

Our systems are built for the cloud rather than moved to it. We use managed platform services for compute, storage, identity, content delivery and messaging, which allows a small team to operate software at a standard that would otherwise require a much larger one.

Infrastructure is defined as code and provisioned reproducibly. Deployments are automated and repeatable. Environments are separated, and changes reach production through a consistent, reviewable path. Availability, scaling and durability are properties of the architecture rather than tasks we perform manually.

Engineering philosophy

Great software begins with the people who use it. Every engineering decision should make work more intuitive, more capable and more enjoyable. Performance and user experience are not competing priorities; they are the hallmarks of exceptional engineering.

We believe software should feel effortless. Powerful capability, thoughtful design and intuitive workflows are engineered together from the very beginning, creating products that professionals genuinely enjoy using.

Start with the work, not the system

We design from the task a person is actually trying to complete, and let the architecture follow. Software shaped around a data model rather than around real work is the most common reason good capability goes unused.

Performance is part of the experience

Responsiveness is a feature, not an optimisation to revisit later. Interaction cost, latency and payload size are treated as design constraints from the first sketch, because software that hesitates is software people work around.

Cutting-edge technology, cutting-edge thinking

New capability is worth only as much as the thinking applied to it. We adopt modern tooling, AI among it, by first rethinking the problem it should solve, rather than attaching it to an existing process and calling the result progress.

Capability that stays effortless

Depth and simplicity are engineered together or not at all. Every feature has to earn its place in the interface, so the product grows more capable over time without ever becoming harder to use.

When you contact us

You will not be routed through layers of outsourced support. You will be speaking with Australians who understand the products, because they are the people designing and building them.

We believe that genuine relationships, accountability and technical excellence produce better software than anonymous ticket queues ever will. Saint Michael Systems is proudly Australian owned, Australian developed, and committed to protecting the trust our customers place in us.
